POP PUNK RADIO SHOW: EPISODE 22 | CELTIC PUNK TRIBUTE to DRAZZLE of PADDY O' PUNK (PPRS-0022)

Episode 22 is a tribute to Drazzle (David Scott Rasile) from the Paddy O' Punk show. He left this world much too early on October 13, 2013, but not before making an impact on the musical community. I knew him as a fellow online radio DJ but he was also a hard-working pipe-fitter, a husband, and a father. His three shows (Paddy O' Punk, Music From The Farside, Coffee Time with Drazzle) were a source of inspiration as I got my own start in online radio years ago.

Bands and artists featured in this playlist include:

Bouncing Souls, Paddy & The Rats, The O'Reillys and the Paddyhats, Curlies, The Kings of Connaught, Mr. Irish Bastard, Fiddler's Green, The Pogues, The Real McKenzies, Dropkick Murphys, The Rumjacks, The Tossers, Diamonds & Guns, Flogging Molly, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

Introduction

The playlist opens with "Bullying The Jukebox" by The Bouncing Souls because I remember having some good jukebox conversations with Drazzle. I believe that he owned at least one or possibly two of the big music machines that played songs on request. At the time of our discussion, many bars and pubs were replacing their old CD and vinyl jukeboxes with their modern digital versions which take up far less space and don't need to be stocked with physical media. As Drazzle informed me, many of these jukeboxes found their way to the local dump and quite often these dumps would be eager to part with them for free if one was able to bring a big truck and enough people to help lift.

Memory

I remember a moment from an episode of Drazzle's Music From The Farside that gave me a good laugh. A few hours before the live broadcast, Drazzle shared a picture of a maple-bacon flavored beer from Voodoo Donut which came in a pink bottle. He planned on sampling this beer while playing music for us and talking about it during the show. My girlfriend at the time had recently come back from a trip and brought this very same bottle of beer back. So I already knew what I thought about it but I wanted to hear Drazzle's opinion.

A little over halfway through the show, Drazzle came back from a block of music to do a voice-over and said something along the lines of "you know, after giving this beer a chance, it is my humble opinion that bacon flavor should stick to bacon." I burst into tears of laughter because my experience with the beer was very similar. Maple bacon beer might sound like a good idea to some people, however the reality is anything but. Back in the 90s or 00s there was an alcohol marketing campaign that said "don't fruit your beer." Well, my ill-informed marketing yuppies, clearly you have never enjoyed a Modelo or Corona with lime and salt around the rim. Muy delicioso! My marketing campaign would be "don't bacon your beer!" You can beer your bacon but not the other way around.

I never met Drazzle in person. I only heard his voice through his online broadcasts and talked with him through the chat-room feature on the website of the radio station we both "worked" at, but I have no shame in saying that I shed a tear or two when I heard of his passing. I felt like I had lost an uncle or a dear friend, because I had. I was brand new to doing online radio at the time I knew Drazzle. He was incredibly supportive during my early years, often sticking around to listen to my shows, sometimes offering valuable feedback but usually just hanging out and talking about music. I am forever grateful for his support and friendship.

Thank you so much for the conversations and the tunes, Drazzle. You are dearly missed. Cheers to you, my friend! 🤘
